Arsenal Squad: Keep/Loan/Sell with @JournoMax

Bernd Leno

JH: Keep. One of our best players last season and saved us on countless occasions. In my opinion, he’s one of the best keepers in Europe and it will be a good battle between him and Emi for number one this season.

MM: Keep. Leno produced some amazing saves throughout the season and without him in goal Arsenal would have likely finished even lower than 8th. He is on the same level as Alisson and Ederson in my opinion and once he is back from injury will be desperate for that number one spot back.

Emi Martinez

JH: Keep. Had massive gloves to fill when Leno got injured but he filled in magnificently. My only worry is that he’ll want to go to a club where he’s guaranteed number one but hopefully he stays and fights for his place.

MM: Keep. Martinez did not put a foot wrong in the absence of Leno and took everyone by surprise with a number of impressive performances after the restart. He has shown he is too good to be a cup keeper and it will be interesting to see how Mikel Arteta manages to keep both his goalkeepers content.

Matt Macey

JH: Keep I suppose. I mean he’s never going to play but realistically who’s going to want to come and be third in the pecking order. You could sell him and promote a youth keeper, but I think he’ll stay for now.

MM: Keep. For no other reason than he is unlikely to be sold for much and unless there are any good youth keepers coming through, there is no need to get rid of him.

Hector Bellerin

JH: Keep. I can’t see Hector leaving. He looks like he’s lost a yard of pace since his return from injury but I still think he has something to offer at right back. He strikes me as a good bloke so hopefully he can find form again.

MM: Keep. I can never understand the abuse Bellerín receives from certain Arsenal fans, he came back from a big injury and after a slow start, you could see his performances improving as he regained match sharpness and he was influential in our FA cup win. I think the Spaniard could be a future Arsenal captain.

Cedric Soares

JH: Keep. I actually think he’s a really solid player. Arteta said he was the best going forward out of the full backs and looks a good defender too. Recently signed a four year deal and I think that's really shrewd business.

MM: Keep. He has only recently signed for Arsenal after an unsuccessful loan from Southampton but in the little game time he has had he has shown he can be a reliable option at right back when called upon and will create healthy competition for Bellerin.

Ainsley Maitland Niles

JH: Sell. I’m going to be honest, he was really good in our FA cup run and has definitely gone up in my estimations. However, it’s difficult to see where he fits as he isn’t good enough to play midfield and we have two solid RB options. I think we could get good value for him in the market so perhaps it's time to cash in. Would be a shame as he has really improved recently but that's football.

MM: Keep. His versatility makes him an excellent squad player to have and his performances in the FA cup semi-final and final were extremely solid. I really like Maitland-Niles and would love to see him stay but if he was sold for around £25 - £30 million then I would understand as Arsenal do need to raise funds.

Kieran Tierney

JH: Keep. One of the first names on the team sheet for good reason. Always gives his all and was very impressive after the restart. Will be an important player next season if he can stay injury free.

MM: Keep. At just 23, Tierney is already one of the most important players for Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal and could be the best Left Back in the league in a few years time. He brings aggression, experience, leadership with him and Arsenal need him to stay injury free next season.

Sead Kolasinac

JH: Keep. Although perhaps not good enough defensively, I still think he’s a good back up option. We’ll struggle to find many better options to play as understudy to Tierney. Plus he’s absolutely hard as nails and gives one hundred percent every game.

MM: Sell. When Kolasinac plays at centre-back he is a massive liability as shown in the Spurs loss. He is a good option at left wing back but he is not better than Tierney, Saka, or Maitland-Niles in that position. I’m not sure how much Arsenal could get for him but he is one they should look to move on in my eyes.

William Saliba

JH: Keep. Of course we’re going to keep this lad. Did very well last season on loan and looks a real prospect. I just hope expectations aren’t ridiculously high for him. We have to be ready to accept that he isn’t the finished article yet and won’t immediately transform our defence.

MM: Keep. He had a great season on loan in Ligue 1 and looks set to walk straight into our back four. I agree that Arsenal fans have set the bar very high for the young lad but patience is key and hopefully he will hit the ground running.

Sokratis

JH: Sell. Although I don’t think he’s our worst defender, I don’t think he possesses the ball playing traits that Arteta seems to want in his CB’s so I think he’ll be moved on. Been linked with Napoli in recent days and I think he’d do well there.

MM: Sell. He has a year left on his contract and with Saliba and potentially Gabriel coming in too he really falls down the pecking order. Arsenal have a lot of central defenders at the club and most of them are not good enough and should be sold. He has been a solid player for us but I can not see a place in the squad for him now.

Rob Holding

JH: Sell. Not good enough. He’s no spring chicken these days and I just don’t think he’s a very good player. Genuinely think Milk turns quicker than that bloke. Seems a nice lad but unfortunately isn’t at the required level.

MM: Sell. Holding is not good enough for Arsenal unfortunately. A lot of Arsenal fans like him but he is not anywhere near the standard required despite a few good performances towards the end of the season. He is another central defender I would sell that would hopefully raise some decent funds.

Shkodran Mustafi

JH: I’d keep him. Not as a starter but seems like he’s turned a corner since Arteta's arrival. He’s not actually that bad on the ball and we can’t sell all our CB’s so he’ll stay to provide competition.

MM: Keep. He showed tremendous improvement under Arteta and whilst he may not be a starter next season, I think he is good back up to have.

Callum Chambers

JH: Keep. Would be a bit harsh to move him on as he’s currently out with a long term injury. Actually looked alright when he played earlier this season so he’ll stay for now. Whether he’s a long term option at CB remains to be seen.

MM: Keep. He is another versatile player who also obviously counts towards our home grown player quota. Chambers was one of our best performing defenders before his unfortunate injury so he is one I would definitely keep.

David Luiz

JH: Sell. I would sell him instantly. So error-prone and nowhere near as good as he seems to think he is. Having said that, I think he’ll stay, especially after he signed a one year contract extension and is apparently a great influence in the dressing room.

MM: Keep. Whilst he may be error prone, he is still a great player to have in the squad. It has been spoken about many times the positive influence he has in the dressing room, and keeping him around will benefit the younger players in the squad.

Pablo Mari

JH: Keep. Just signed a four year deal and looks very comfortable on the ball. Looked a little weak in the tackle when he did play but hopefully he can improve. Arteta was desperate for a left footed centre half and he’s got one in Mari.

MM: Keep. He has not had many chances to show what sort of player he is but as Jonny said, has recently signed a four year deal and is the all important left footed centre back Arteta was asking for.

Lucas Torreira

JH: Keep. I think he’s a really tidy player. Good on the ball and very tenacious in the middle of the park. Didn’t play as much as he would’ve liked following the restart but I think he’s good enough to stay and compete for a spot in our midfield. Been linked with a move away recently but hopefully we can hang on to him.

MM: Sell. I really liked Torreira and still do but he has lost his way a bit and under Arteta he fell down the pecking order behind Xhaka and Ceballos. With potential incomings in midfield such as Partey, I believe Torreira should be let go and he can be sold for a decent fee too.

Granit Xhaka

JH: Keep. Has established himself as a mainstay in our midfield under Arteta and has shown just how important he is to the way we play. Showed great character to come back into the side following the incident with the fans in November and I think he’s a real leader both on and off the pitch. Love this man.

MM: Keep. In my eyes Granit Xhaka should be the first name on the team sheet. He is crucial to the way we play and is also a great leader on the pitch. The stats speak volumes in terms of how much he affects how well Arsenal play. When Xhaka starts, Arsenal rarely lose.

Matteo Guendouzi

JH: Sell. Fallen massively out of favour since the Brighton game and his attitude is just terrible. We can’t afford to have players like that in our squad and I don’t think he’s good enough to compensate for his ego. He’s still young so hopefully a club is dumb enough to give us good money for him.

MM: Sell. Guendouzi was one of Arsenal’s best players under Unai Emery but after a number of internal issues, starting from the trip to Dubai, he has been completely sidelined from the team. He is a good player but his attitude stinks and hopefully Arsenal can get good money for the young Frenchman.

Mohamed Elneny

JH: Sell. Wasn’t a bad player when he played but I don’t think he’s good enough to be part of our squad going forward. Was recently on loan at Besiktas and looked happy there. Hopefully they will look to sign him permanently.

MM: Sell. He was on loan last year and was not missed at all. Arsenal should look to get his wages off their bill as soon as possible, albeit for a small fee or even another loan if needed.

Joe Willock

JH: Sell. Simply put, he’s not good enough. Given a lot of chances last season and failed to impress. He’s still young so he can still prove himself at another team and I’d wish him all the best should he move on.

MM: Loan. Willock is nothing better than an average player at the moment and should not be starting for a club like Arsenal. He is not attacking enough for CAM but not defensive enough to be further back in the midfield. However, he is still reasonably young and I feel a loan may help him discover his best position and improve him as a player and Arteta clearly likes him.

Emile Smith-Rowe

JH: Loan. Not sure he’s ready to play at the highest level so I’d look to loan him to another Championship side. Having said that, rumour has it he’s in the first team plans this season so hopefully he performs.

MM: Keep. Huddersfield fans loved him when he was on loan there last year and Arteta reportedly wants to take a look at him next year. He plays in a position where we lack, and could provide the creativity we need. I doubt he will get many minutes in the premier league but he can use Bukayo Saka as an example and kick on in the Europa league before potentially breaking into the first team for good.

Mesut Ozil

JH: Keep. Oh what to do about this man. Been frozen out of the side recently but I think he’s still got enough quality to help us this season. A lot better than the other attacking midfielders we have so we’ll see if he can work his way back into the team. Definitely won’t leave so he’ll be eager to work his way back into the managers plans.

MM: Keep. On his day, Mesut Özil can be one of the best players in the world, sadly these days are rare now. He has been hung out to dry due to his excessive wages and did not feature at all after the restart. As much as Arsenal would love to shift his wages, it is highly unlikely anyone will want to come in and buy Ozil from us. I hope he can show Arteta what he is made of and prove a lot of people wrong next year.

Bukayo Saka

JH: Keep. Had an incredible breakthrough season last year and he’ll certainly be looking to build on it. Seems a really down to earth, level-headed lad and that attitude will only help him improve. Recently given the number seven shirt so hopefully that gives him a little boost too.

MM: Keep. He had an amazing first season as part of the first team and was our best player on many occasions. Saka is by far our greatest prospect and hopefully he kicks on next year and fights for his place at the euros.

Reiss Nelson

JH: Loan. Nowhere near good enough at the moment. Like Willock, has had many chances to impress and has failed to take advantage. There could be a player there so maybe a solid season of football somewhere else can help bring that out. Needs to work on final ball and consistency if he ever wants to make it here.

MM: Loan. He has failed to take his chances in the first team so far but has shown glimpses of quality when playing. It is well too early to write him off and sell him so a loan to a top league side in Europe should suit him well.

Nicolas Pepe

JH: Keep. Pepe had a decent first season at the Emirates but will be certainly looking to improve his output this year considering the money we paid for him. I honestly believe he’s going to break the shackles of his price tag and turn into a real quality player this year. He’s settled in now so hopefully we’ll see his best form this season.

MM: Keep. Pepe struggled a bit at times last year but as the season wore on and he got more used to the demands of English football we really started to see the player that performed so well at Lille. Next season could be a massive season for him, he has a lot of people to prove wrong.

Gabriel Martinelli

JH: Keep. This guy could be really special for us in the future. Showed what he was capable of in cup competitions and scored vital goals in the league. Unfortunately suffered a long term injury and won’t be available until January. Needs to be carefully managed when he returns.

MM: Keep. The Brazilian is only 19 but when he plays is always one of our best players. His injury is unfortunate but I’m sure I speak on behalf of all Arsenal fans when I say I can’t wait to see him back in red and white.

Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang

JH: Keep. Seems only a matter of time until his new contract is announced. Would be very well deserved as he has scored so many goals for us since he arrived. We need him to continue to score goals this season if we want to push and get to the next level. World class player.

MM: Keep. Where would Arsenal be without Aubameyang? The news that he has reportedly signed his new deal is a huge boost for Arsenal and hopefully Arteta can build the team around him for the next few years.

Alexandre Lacazette

JH: Keep. I think he’s criminally underrated. Offers so much more than just goals. His link up play and work rate is incredible. I agree he needs to score more but he’s a really important player for us who has to stay.

MM: Keep. I agree that Lacazette is well too disrespected, he sacrifices a lot on the pitch and whilst he may not score as many as Aubameyang, he does really help the team. He was a big part of our victories against Liverpool, City and Chelsea and hopefully he stays and fights for that striker role.

Eddie Nketiah

JH: Loan. Not good enough at the moment. Doesn’t offer what Lacazette does in terms of hold up play and doesn’t score enough goals either. Like Nelson, maybe playing consistently week in week out will help him discover his potential.

MM: Loan. Nketiah shows glimpses of a great goal scorer but he is still very raw. Despite his age, he’s shown he really knows where the goal is. A loan to another premier league side would suit him and hopefully he can be our internal Aubameyang replacement in the future.
